Tumbled Dragon Blood Stone

This fascinating stone is commonly referred to as “Dragon Blood Jasper” or “Dragon Blood Stone” and is a recent find in South Africa. The exact mineral composition though is up for debate! One opinion is that the minerals are green epidote and piemontite, while the opposing view is that it’s a bastite (a pseudomorph of a serpentine variety). Until chemical analysis of this rock has been performed and published its origins are as mysterious as a dragon! Named after local legend that the stone is the remains of deceased ancient dragons – the green being the skin and the red the blood.
