Fool’s Gold

Pyrite is also known as ‘fool’s gold’ due to the mineral’s gold color, metallic luster, and high specific gravity, all of which often cause it to be mistaken for gold by inexperienced prospectors. Pyrite is named after the Greek word ‘pyr’, which means ‘fire’. It can be struck against metal or other hard objects to create sparks to help start a fire.
